The A stood tall even among a class of distinguished steam on the N&W roster. Modern, efficient, fast, powerful, and versatile, the A made its reputation in being not only the benchmark for steam, but often the new diesels competing for their place on the roster. Although best known for speeding priority manifest freights, the A's could handle any job required and often found themselves in other roles. But perhaps most impressive of all their stats was the daily reliability - a testament to not only the engineers but the hard-working army in the N&W's shops and "lubritoriums."
